Untitled (Bullseye, Tanks), 1990
A second collaboration with artist Jeff Chapline, Untitled (Bullseye, Tanks) is currently displayed in the Gallery of the Fine Arts Building. The glass panels were originally intended to be installed at a new Box Office in the lobby of the Clare Rostan Appel Theatre. However, once created, a decision was made to install the panels in a free-standing wood frame with recessed lighting that illuminates the glass from behind.
The artist collaborated with a dedicated group of Schalick High School students and with Appel Farm Board member Preston Forchion, creating hand-drawn images for each panel. Stencils were created from the original drawings. These stencils were then placed over the glass and sandblasted to etch positive and negative shapes. Though the meaning of the piece is open to interpretation, the artwork has a clear anti-war theme. The panel titled Bullseye, for example, uses images of Native Americans, while the panel titled Trucks incorporates images of planes, military trucks and the Statue of Liberty in repeated patterns. The work is both elegant and thought-provoking.
