Theatre Tile Project
When the lobby addition of the Clare Rostan Appel Theatre was constructed in 1993, sections of the exterior of the building were left empty in anticipation of a community arts project. Thanks to the collaborative efforts of Summer Arts Program 2000 campers, staff members, friends and local artists, the Theatre is now the site of a dazzling mosaic. Under the guidance of ceramics instructor Juhi Bendahan, the students from the Summer Arts Program created forty-five hand-made tiles by the close of summer 2000. Staffer and ceramic artist Matina Lagakos continued the bisque firing and glazing process, and soon the tiles were ready to be installed on the walls. Under the direction of Jackie Stack Lagakos, a community artist who specializes in mosaic and multimedia artworks, the tiles were arranged in a beautiful collage featuring borders of mirror, tile fragments and marbles. Work was completed on a wintery afternoon in November and, as the outside lights were turned on, the whole theatre became alive with dancing light, color, sparkle and personality.
The facade of the Clare Rostan Appel Theatre has now become what it was intended to be–a testament to the talent, creativity and effort of the entire Appel Farm community.

"We wanted to produce a musically inspired mosaic, with vibrant colors that worked in harmony."
Jackie Stack Lagakos
