Community-building at Appel Farm begins in each bunk. Campers are welcomed into a bunk with 7 to 11 other campers and two resident Bunk Counselors. Bunk assignments are made according to age and grade, with a goal to fill every bunk with a mix of new and returning campers each session. Bunk Counselors help campers to create a fun, safe, friendly and comfortable living space – many Appel alums still write to us about their memories of fantastic counselors and
instructors who made a lasting impression on their lives.
Campers also get together with their bunk-mates to offer workshops, or for special activities like pizza and pool parties. Spend a night with your bunk at our group camping area to experience outdoor camping and learn about fire building and cooking over an open flame. As you sit around a campfire gazing up at a clear, star-filled sky, campers tell stories, learn about nature and deepen bonds with friends and counselors in a unique and intimate setting.
Maintaining and caring for your living space is a shared responsibility that bunk-mates and counselors all work together to achieve. In addition to bunk chores, each bunk works together daily on an assigned community responsibility such as tending the organic garden, dining hall preparation and clean-up, helping to keep the grounds clean or offering a workshop. Everyone here believes that community responsibilities are an integral part of the Appel Farm experience. In working together, we all encourage and acknowledge our interdependence on one another. By sharing responsibilities, we all become more sensitive to and respect the needs of others while keeping the Appel Farm community vibrant and beautiful.
