Photography Major or Minor in Photography and learn the fundamental techniques of black and white photography from the basic use of a camera to creating a final print. A complete introduction to the camera includes learning about exposures, image composition and the use of different films and lenses. Field trips and "shooting" assignments are followed by extensive work in the darkroom as you learn how to develop film, make quality prints, and finish and present your work. Become familiar with darkroom set-up, equipment and chemistry, and receive an introduction to the language of photography and basic elements and technical skills including composition, framing, lighting, time
and sequence.
More advanced photographers, whether Majors or Minors, will also have opportunities to explore advanced printing techniques and the aesthetics of photography using photographs, slides and books, in discussions and through individual and group critiques and workshop assignments. Campers also have opportunities to exhibit their work and participate in a Photo Show at the end of each session.
Majors participate in an active program to learn about digital video equipment and Final Cut Pro software basics. You also study the many roles, skills and techniques necessary for producing,
screenwriting, directing, designing, filming, editing, film scoring and sound engineering. Campers work closely with instructors and with each other to perfect skills and plan a wide variety of projects. Whether out on the campus filming or working in the studio, Video Majors play key roles in the production of several short films that are presented to the camp community at the Video Show at the end of each session.
Video Minors focus on a single aspect of filmmaking such as cinematography, editing or sound design. Exercises highlight the principles, techniques and tools of these specific areas, and you become attuned to the critical contribution one aspect of filmmaking makes to the final form of the work. Video Minors may also have opportunities to work on short films and work on wide-ranging collaborative projects.
Recording Arts is the newest program at Appel Farm – and it is expanding every year! During Majors and Minors, campers in all departments will have opportunities to work in the new Recording Studio with the Recording Arts instructors. You may wish to record original music with a band or ensemble, design sound effects for a play, create a soundtrack for a video project, combine poetry and music as part of a dance piece, or incorporate sound into a photography or art exhibition. Why not come in for an introduction to the possibilities and to discuss ideas for new projects?
If you are interested in sound design and editing, recording, composition, broadcasting, or post-production, we encourage you to consider a Minor in Recording Arts. Recording Arts Minors will be introduced to the fundamentals of sound recording using Pro Tools software and a range of recording equipment and gain a hands-on knowledge of the skills necessary to record, edit and mix audio on a basic level.
Interested in poetry, creative nonfiction and short story writing? Creative Writing Minors explore these art forms as they examine works of literature and learn about writers’ choices of style, point of view, structure, use of language and characterization. Share your own work with the group to strengthen vocabulary and develop critical skills, while at the same time participating in a process of interactive revision in a positive and supportive setting.
Journalism Minors follow a similar program while focusing on publishing summer issues of The Appel Core, the camp newsletter. Learn about all aspects of creating content and giving structure to a publication as campers become staff writers and editors, conduct interviews, report news, write editorial columns and design and edit the newsletter for publication.
