Campers choosing Music as a Major or Minor begin by meeting with the Head of Music to design an individual schedule based on their musical interests, skills and experience. Music Majors should be at an intermediate or advanced level and be able to read and
play music at a middle school level or higher. A Minor in Music is perfect for a beginning musician, for someone wanting to sing or learn an instrument, or anyone wishing to keep up his or her skills or study music at any level.
Campers in the Music Program focus and receive private instruction on a primary instrument (including voice), though you may choose to play a second or third instrument in ensembles. You also spend a majority of your time playing in ensembles that allow you to sight-read, rehearse, learn from an experienced conductor and perform music of many styles and time periods. Voice Majors can focus on specific genres or styles, including opera, jazz and popular music. Groups are formed to work in small ensembles
that range from rock bands, string ensembles, choruses and jazz combos to chamber groups. Larger ensembles include the Concert Band, Jazz Band, All-Major Choir and the Orchestra. In addition to ensemble work, additional classes can be taken in music theory, composition, conducting, sight-reading, music history and music appreciation. Each camper in the Music Program receives one half-hour of private instruction per week, complemented by time for rehearsal, ensemble sessions and playing independently. Campers play music with staff members, both formally and informally, throughout each session, giving young musicians very special mentoring and support.
