Theater PerformanceTheater Performance Major

Campers learn and/or refine their acting skills, study theater techniques and theory, and work together with instructors and cast through a combination of acting classes, rehearsals and performances. Emphasis is placed on learning and practicing the processes and the technical and expressive skills needed to be an effective actor. At the same time, the theoretical and historical background of theater as an art form are taught to increase each student’s appreciation of the field.

Theater Performance Majors are cast in one of six plays performed at the end of each session. There are no formal auditions. Theater staff observes theater Majors during the first two days of Sewing Costumescamp as they read, act and participate in a variety of theater games and exercises. Everyone is cast in a play based on his or her ability and skill level, and on the special requirements of each ensemble-based play. Instruction and activities in daily classes and rehearsal sessions focus on overall techniques, skills and theory more than on a final performance. A wide range of plays is presented each session, giving young actors an opportunity to participate in a musical, a comedy, a drama, a classical piece, improvisations or an original play!

Theater Performance Minor

Theater Performance Minors offer campers in-depth explorations of focused areas of theater. Emphasis is again placed on teaching processes and skills and may lead to the development of a short, informal performance piece. A Minor can be designed around disciplines such as scene-based acting, playwriting, an introduction to directing, stage combat, audition techniques, Technical Theatermusical theater skills, comedy sketch techniques and many other areas.

Technical Theater

Become a behind-the-scenes expert with a Major or Minor in Technical Theater and enter the fascinating world of theater production. Study the fundamentals of theatrical design and develop both artistic and technical skills that will make a performance come alive. Campers learn to work as a team to design lighting, sound, sets, props and costumes for each performance and they become responsible for all aspects of stage management.

Free Choice

During Free Choice, join The Actor’s Studio! These short sessions are designed for Theater Majors or for anyone interested in exchanging ideas and performing techniques, discussing character development and approaches to acting and for delving into the actor’s world in greater depth.
