2 Majors & 2 Minors

Tthis summer, campers will get to choose TWO Majors and TWO Minors! The new Major and Minor structure creates so much more fun at Appel Farm! Trust us that there are only great things to come from this. Every year you come back means another summer of new possibilities combined with your old favorites.

Things that are the same about Majors and Minors:

  • Same great programs Majors in Theater, Music, Dance, Visual Arts, Photo, and Video
  • Majors have performances and exhibitions at the end of each session
  • Same daily schedule -- we split the Major block in the morning into two!

Great new additions:

  • Sports, Swimming lessons, Fiber Arts, GREEN Corp, Creative Writing, and Journalism are all Majors now!
  • Dive into four activities instead of just 3
  • Minors will be based on specific topics so you can really focus your interests
  • Many new choices unique to each summer's talented staff

We realize that our return campers will have lots of questions about this new schedule, so here are some questions we have anticipated. Feel free to e-mail us at camp@appelfarm.org if you have any other questions.

Questions and Answers about the new Major and Minor structure:

1. When will I be able to choose my Majors and Minors?

Campers will choose their Majors before camp starts. A Major Selection form will be in the confirmation packet when you register for camp. For everyone that registered in the Fall, we’ll be sending your packets at the end of January. Campers will learn about the Minors we are offering the day before they arrive at camp, and will choose their Minors when on Check-In Day.

2. I have been a Theater Major in the past. How is that going to work now?

The Performance Theater Major of the past will look and feel pretty much the same. If you would like to be in a production, you must “double major” in Theater Performance by signing up for Acting Major 1 and Theater Production Major 2. The fun part is that if you are just hoping to develop your acting skills, but aren’t interested in being in a show, you are able to sign up for just Acting during Major 1.

3. How does Majoring in Music compare now to how it used to be?

Music Majors of the past now have a lot more options! If you would like to develop your instrumental skills in a small ensemble of similar musicians (like all the strings players together, guitarists are together for Rockestra, etc.) and receive private lessons, then sign up for Major 1. If you are just hoping to be in a large ensemble like a rock band, Elmer Pops (our new orchestra/jazz band) or the Chorus, then sign up for Major 2. If you want to play music all morning, then sign up for both and it will feel just like it always has to be a Music Major. Of course remember Music Majors are for musicians playing at an intermediate middle school level. If you are just beginning to play or sing, you should sign up for our beginner classes during Minors.

4. Can I do a double major in the same department?

Campers can choose two Majors in the same department if they are different classes. So, you could choose to stick with Visual Arts all morning as long as you choose two different courses such as Painting Major 1 and Ceramics Major 2. Another example would be Dance where you could choose to take Ballet Major 1 and Modern/Jazz Major 2. If you would like to spend more time in Photography or Video, then you should sign up for one Major and then take a Minor in that department so you are learning different things in each class. For instance, you could take Genera, Photography Major 1 and then choose Rocktography, Alternative Photography or Portrait Photography for a Minor.

5. Will I be working towards a performance or exhibition in my Majors and Minors?

The classes you choose for your Majors will result in performances during the Mini-Session Showcase or Performance Week. Minors will give you the opportunity to learn and discover without the pressure of producing finished products or performing. Like in the past, Minors classes always have the option of offering informal productions or sharing during Friday Night Concerts.
