2/7: Painting - Abstract Painting on Glass

Using the principles of abstract painting – mark making, color and composition, you will create a painting on one side of a piece of glass that is transformed and illuminated when viewed from the other side.

2/14: Drawing - Create a Cityscape Lantern

Imaginary Cityscapes are drawn with black Sharpies first, and then colored with bright inks on vellum paper to become a beautiful nightlight for your bedroom.

2/21: Printmaking - Creating Collagraphs

Bubble wrap, lace, string, leaves, and other objects are adhered to a plate to create multiple works of art.  Collagraphy is a unique form of printmaking – the inked three-dimensional printing plate is every bit as much a piece of art as your finished prints.

2/28: Mixed Media - Dream Mosaics

Let your imagination soar!  Baubles, beads, buttons and glass make a colorful dream mosaic.

3/7: Book Arts - Tunnel Books

Tunnel books are made from a series of illustrations that work together to form an illusion of depth and perspective.  They can be found in Children’s Illustrated Pop – up books and this is a great technique that can be used to jazz-up your next school project.

3/14: Ceramics - Treasure Boxes

Use clay to build a special box to hold your treasures  - jewelry, shells, figurines - whatever your treasure may be.

3/21: Drawing - Life-Sized Self Portraits

Turn yourself into a life-sized work of art using your powers of observation plus paint, pattern and texture.

3/28: Sculpture - Paper & Wire Mobiles

Create a whimsical, kinetic sculpture in the spirit of Alexander Calder by gently draping transparent and opaque papers over a wire armature that suspends from a ceiling and moves through the air.

4/11: Ceramics - Coil Pot Birdhouses

Coil building uses rolled pieces of clay to form a vessel. In this workshop, you will make a bird house for their favorite feathered friend!

4/18: Book Arts - Decoupage Journals

Book-binding techniques, tissue, fancy papers, fabric and paint combine to make a one of a kind journal!

4/25: Sculpture - Found Object Sculpture

Celebrate Earth Day by creating your own found object work of sculpture from recycled household    materials.  Then, join your classmates in building a collaborative large-scale recycled sculpture for Appel Farm's Organic Garden.

5/2: Painting - From Pointillism to Pollack

French artist Georges Seurat used small dabs of color to create a painting. American artist Jackson Pollack was the polar opposite:  he used large brushes and splattered paint. Compare and contrast while learning both techniques.
