Sometimes you meet a person who absolutely shares your belief system – when you talk about the important stuff, they get it! No need to explain, no blank stare. They just get it! That person for me (and on a larger scale, for Appel Farm Arts Camp) is Kristina Hill.
Kristina is a professional photographer, arts educator and mom to Olive, her widely creative, scientist-to-be, 4 year-old daughter. In addition to her freelance Photography career, Kristina also runs an art school for young creators, aged infant, toddler and beyond – Creative and Curious. Located in Wayne, NJ, Creative and Curious offers a child-directed curriculum with a focus on the use of the visual and performing arts to explore themes within language arts, science/nature, mathematics, social studies/geography and health/safety/nutrition.
About Creative and Curious’ program, Kristina writes: “We believe that children learn best when they are actively engaged in an activity that piques their curiosity.” That’s it! That is the core of my teaching philosophy and that of Appel Farm: children and adults not only learn best, but they become their best selves when they are given opportunities to be creative and curious!
I saw this belief in practice, this past summer, when Kristina joined our staff at Appel Farm Arts Camp as our Head of Visual Arts. I was teaching a Mixed Media Fiber Arts Class in one room and next door, Kristina was teaching a Multi-Media Sculpture Class. Her teaching style is fluid, student-driven and process-based. The art studios that housed our two classes were open air with no dividing door between. I could hear everything that was said in her room. I could, also, hear the excitement in her students’ voices. When Kristina met with a student to talk about a project and where it was going, her enthusiasm was boundless. Kristina is a “yes!” teacher. All ideas are good ideas and her role as a teacher, is to make whatever a student wants to happen, happen!
I cannot wait to see this teaching style in practice again at our Mother Daughter Dream Retreat, March 16 – 18! On the Sunday of our retreat, Kristina will be teaching two workshops – Fused Glass Pendants and a Media Arts/Photography Portrait class where Mother Daughter pairs will turn a portrait of themselves into a beautiful work of art that they will treasure forever.
There is still time to reserve your space at the Mother Daughter Dream Art Retreat. Learn from, work with and hang out with the amazing Kristina Hill! This retreat is recommended for all mothers and daughters, age 7 and above. To register: https://www.appelfarm.org/dream-form-updated/
